El intento de un mar - Enrique Ramírez
Fort Sainte-Agathe, Porquerolles island
September 21, 2023 - November 5, 2023
At Fort Sainte-Agathe in Porquerolles, under the dome, discover the video work by Chilean artist Enrique Ramírez El intento de un mar (The attempt of a sea).
El intento de un mar opens with a personal story, that of Henry Churchill, a Nigerian boxer who recounts the wounds of his country, those of Africa, the colonisation and the present desire for somewhere else, for a journey despite the risks.
“There’s no water in my country. We don’t swim. You go in the water and you die. Because you know, I can’t swim.”
Lying on a board, floating, Henry Churchill gradually transforms into a boat. Braving his fear, the fear of the thousands of migrants who set off each year towards an uncertain future.
Here, he seems to be merging with a sail to become his own vessel.
Inspired by an anonymous English invention – a sail for a human being – the work version created by Enrique Ramírez is tinged with hope and poetry. The rainbow sail becomes the bearer of an utopian future, a voyage on the winds towards another world, a dream of elsewhere.
