« For a few days in August 2019, the whole world’s attention was focused on the Amazon as the worst fires in nearly a decade raged (…). What are the drivers of this destruction ? Violence, greed, corruption, poverty, inequality, bad governance and inefficient public policy are just some of the intersecting factors that are leading to the forest’s demise. » Sam Cowie (@samcowie84), british journalist who accompanied Tommaso Protti (@tomprotti) during his 6-month photo report.

Capitalism has reached even the remotest areas of the Amazon. Italian photographer @tomprotti achieved to capture its conflicts and contradictions with a Leica M Monochrom and SL from our loanpool. Thanks to photo editor @carolkoerting who always spots the right talents to support! #lfimagazine #savetheamazon #lfiloanpool

Paulo Paulino Guajajara, member of the Guardians of the Forest, was killed by illegal loggers last week. He was also portrayed in @tomprotti’s series « Terra Vermelha ». Protti was deeply shocked by this news, deploring that ‘Brazil is one of the deadliest country for leaders of indigenous, peasant and traditional communities’. The series, currently published in LFI 08.2019, will also be exhibited at @mep.paris this December. #lfimagazine #savetheamazon #lfiloanpool #amazonia #leicamonochrom

🌳 Of all the countries in the world, Brazil lost the greatest area of tropical primary rainforest in 2018 — 1.3 million hectares in total. Although this figure is less than the 2016–2017 fire-related spike, it’s still above historical levels.
