[CALL OPEN] 📣

We were very excited to announce the theme of the 11th edition of the #PrixCarmignac: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (#DRC)

4 times the size of #France, the DRC benefits from immense #natural & #mineral resources; the world’s largest #rainforest after the #Amazon; the world’s largest producer of #cobalt and #coltan, the second largest producer of #diamonds… But the DR Congo, ripped apart by recurrent inter-community and political conflicts, also accumulates misery, epidemics and clashes.

📸The Carmignac Photojournalism Award aims to support a journalistic and photographic project which will document these complex realities, but also address the grounds for hope for the 90 million inhabitants of the DRC, of which 60% are younger than 20 years old: education and public health initiatives; conservation initiatives for wildlife; and the fight against trafficking, corruption and the control of a few individuals and multinationals over mining exploitation.

The jury will meet in Nov. 2019 and is composed of:
– Simon Baker (@simonalamep), Director of @mep.paris ;
– Maryline Baumard (@marylinebaumard) Editor-in-Chief @lemondeafrique ;
– Comfort Ero Africa Program Director, International Crisis Group ;
– Meaghan Looram (@mloo), Director of Photography @nytimes ;
– Julienne Lusenge, President of SOFEPADI (Women’s Solidarity for Peace and Integral Development) and Director of the Fund for Congolese Women (FFC) ;
– Fiona Shields, Director of Photography @guardian ;
– The Laureate of the 10th Edition of the Carmignac #Photojournalism Award.

The pre-jury has the task of pre-selecting between 12 and 15 proposals and is composed of :
– Magdalena Herrera, (@magdalena.herrera), Director of Photography @magazinegeo ;
– Nicolas Jimenez (@nikkhola) Director of Photography @lemondefr ;
– Nick Kirkpatrick (@nick_kirkpatrick), Photo Editor for Special Projects and Investigations @washingtonpost @washpostphoto ;

« Arctic: New Frontier » : Yuri Kozyrev and Kadir van Lohuizen co-laureates of the 9th #PrixCarmignac documented the consequences of #globalwarming in the #Arctic region. One of them is the militarization of strategic areas.

Kadir van Lohuizen traveled in the North of #Canada, to Qaussuituq* in the South of Cornwallis Island. It’s one of the coldest inhabited places in the #world. Winter goes from October to June, with temperatures dropping to -50°C.
Resolute is the strategic point of one of the famous « Northwest Passage » routes, whose water sovereignty is in dispute, particularly with the United States.
Hence the recent installation of a Canadian Armed Forces training center.

Fonctionnement
